About
Dr. David E. Lawler is a dentist who, self admittedly, is obsessed with sleep medicine. This obsession started with a casual conversation with a friend who is a local pulmonologist who indicated that there was no local dentist properly trained to work with his sleep apnea patients who could not tolerate conventional treatment.
As a result of this conversation, Dr. Lawler took an introductory workshop in dental sleep medicine. By coincidence, almost immediately after attending this initial conference, a patient contacted Dr. Lawler’s office asking for help with his sleep apnea. This formerly active person had become debilitated by his sleep disorder to the point where he was almost non-functional. Dr. Lawler fabricated an oral appliance for him and watched with amazement as this patient came back to life. While most dentists treating these sleep-related breathing disorders rarely take more than an introductory course in the management of these disorders, Dr. Lawler quickly saw that this was a therapy that, in order to be truly effective, required a complete immersion.
Since this time Dr. Lawler has taken more training in sleep medicine than any other dentist in southern Indiana and recently was awarded his board certification in dental sleep medicine. While readily admitting his obsession with sleep medicine, Dr. Lawler refers to it as his “Magnificent Obsession” and calls it the most rewarding professional endeavor he has ever embarked upon.
Most recently Dr. Lawler is studying a new therapy called Oral Systemic Balance developed by Dr. Ferrand Robson of Tacoma, Washington. This therapy, sometimes referred to as OSB is adding new insights into mot only helping patients sleep better, but feel better in amazing ways. For information on Oral Systemic Balance click here.
